bird processing
#1
May be in the wrong area but I'm trying to find out information about processing ducks and geese, using the down/feathers etc. Finding info on how to get the most of the meat is easy but anything about how to process the down for use is harder to find. Anyone have any recommendations for books or websites that have good, reliable information on using all of the bird?

I know that when I was given a set of tail and wing feathers from a hawk in Germany, they told me to keep them in a ziploc bag for a few weeks before I did anything with them. Apparently a lot of mites and other small insects live or feed on things caught in the feathers.

Would be interested to hear about how the down is processed as well.

I've had the feathers in a plastic bag since last season. Last night I sewed up a couple of tight-weave nylon bags and threw the feathers in them (double bagged) and ran them through the washing machine and drier. I'll let you know how they turned out. The plan is to make my daughter a down vest.
