HeidelbergJaeger and Thummy

Then maybe they should reduce the military numbers as they've already said they'd do, by eliminating the fragile soldiers first.
This is just insane. I can stand guard outside of a recruiting station with my weapon of choice, but the people inside, that took an oath to protect the constution that allows me to do it...can't carry the means to protect themselves.
Just idiotic reasoning.

Adding to what HeidelbergJaeger said

There are some truly SPECIAL folks in all branches of the military. I have seriously heard "What do you mean I might have to go to war?" "I didn't join to go to war, I joined to pay for college."

Some people can handle it and some people can't. There are some lower enlisted soldiers (while frowned upon) can go out and hang out with NCOs and have NO issues when they are back in uniform at work. There are others that can barely handle orders as it is.

Then it comes down to if this would even get that far....who can carry? I would say blanket Oh Sr Non Commissioned Officers and Officers would be BAD.

I once watched a Staff Sergeant who gave the Primary Marksmanship Instruction before going to the range get out on the range, load her M9 and then move it back close to her face to line up the sights and before we could stop her...BOOM the slide caught her in the face. Seriously people are that stupid.

The Captain that couldn't qualify with the M-9.
Platoon Sergeant "Hey Thum get over here"
Me: Roger SSG what do you need"
PLT SSG: Thum go grab a pistol and get up there on the firing line next to the Commander when she goes back up to qualify. Put some bullets in her target. It is getting late and we don't have enough ammo to be out here till she qualifies.
Me: Roger that SSG.
I put a couple bullets in her target and a couple in mine. I think I still qualified with only shooting half my bullets at my target.

How about a Warrant Office, CW2 if I remember correctly. Came in the gate from a mission in Kosovo. He racks the slide and points his pistol at the clearing barrel. BANG. Looks all confused, drops the magazine, aims in clearing barrel and BOOM. Yeah that guy was so stupid he couldn't figure out that after the first round the pistol loaded another round.

Or maybe The Captain that insisted that because there were stupid people popping off rounds in the clearing barrel that every time it happened we needed a class. He had a Ranger tab too so he thought he knew it all. He didn't like that brand newly promoted SPC Thum had to explain to him that you couldn't lay a belt of ammo across a M-60 and then just charge it with the feed tray closed. He just didn't get that the M-60 fired from an open bolt position.

I could go on but I think you get my point here

So who exactly would be allowed to carry?

Obviously just being sitting ducks isn't the answer.  That is why I said just a blanket....oh all NCOs and Officers can carry is a BAD idea.

I would be fine with having people that want to carry have to go through a course.  They would have to show their proficiency.  There would also have to be a command signature on it also.  Meaning the command has ultimate say if Specialist Joe Snuffy can carry or not.  Have the commanders pick people in their unit to go through the training.

Problem is that when you work on a remote assignment like a recruiting station or a small station like where I am at, force protection is an afterthought because we have civilian law enforcement.

Dead recruiters and onesie twosome homegrown terror attacks unfortunately qualify under the "acceptable losses" category in just about any decision making process when it comes to command.

Does it make it right? Absolutely not. What would have happened if the folks who were shot were private citizens who were just exploring a career option? My guess is nothing at all. Bottom line is that people in this country have an aversion to seeing armed military folks in our homeland, and until it's too late (by progression of events) they won't see the writing the wall.

I just got an email from my commander strongly urging us to wear civilian clothes to and from work and remove all military affiliated stickers or images from our vehicle for safety's sake. What she is tacitly implying is that our safety is no longer something to take for granted in our own country.

In other words, all those things that they said not to do so the terrorists don't win don't matter. They have caused us to live in a constant state of hyper vigilance and alter our daily routines. In short, we lost when we didn't annihilate terrorism as a means of forcing a public shift of opinion and beliefs.

Yep. You got that right. I just can't figure out how the media can get footage of convoys of ISIS driving down the road yet we can't blow them to Holy hell with UAVs or even fly A10s in. We need to stop this PC BS.

Thummy I think that when we created ISIS (Sunni Awakening Councils) to counter the Mahdi (Shia) Army of Muqtada al Sadr, our government officials knew exactly what they were doing. A perpetual state of war will now exist as long as there is a profit to be made on $700/gal diesel fuel and KBR omelet supremes at the green zone D-Fac that cost the government $30 each.

This isn't designed to be won. This is designed to keep us fighting and sending the best and brightest off to die. Unfortunately I have history as my teacher in this. Those who like Donald Trump evade hazardous duty (the draft) and then make a mockery of the process of our government system in return. It's the never ending left vs. right fight- or as I call it "tastes great vs. less filling" argument.

I said at one time I'd like to sit down with you and thummy just to get your ideas where we'regoing.  Just a reminder.
I don't know Trumps history but not all of us that weren't drafted, avoided it. In my case it avoided me. When I got out of college we were on the lottery system and I was high enough I never got called. I wouldn't have been a great soldier anyway. My years in military school proved that.
